Chapter Fourteen
OVER THE past week, Jack had indulged a few fantasies about how Danny would finally end up back under him. Some had him pliant and submissive, neck bent in surrender. Others had him snarling, Jackâs fingers digging into the nape of his neck.
None of them started with Danny throwing a balled-up jacket at his head. Jack batted it out of the air and sat up. âWhat?â
âI thought Gregor had found you,â Danny growled, stalking across the room. âWhere the hell have youââ
Jack sat up abruptly, sucking in a deep breath. He couldnât smell his brother, just Danny, blood and a lingering sourness he didnât recognize. âYou saw Gregor?â
Danny paused, squinting. âDidnât you?â
âNo.â The admission felt like a failure on his tongueâhe spat it out like it tasted bad. âWhen I got there, the attacker was already gone. I chased their trail through the streets and the Wild for an hour or more. I can tell you one thing, though: it wasnât my brother.â
âYou think that Gregorâsâ¦.â Danny paused, looking for a word. ââ¦not involved? In these murders?â
It was a human word, a human idea. Jack couldnât deny that it fit here, though. The bodies theyâd found werenât challengers or prey, and theyâd not been killed to assert dominance or from need. So, what was left but murder?
Not involved, though?
âI think that heâs not alone,â Jack said. Leaning forward, he rested his elbows on his knees and looked at Danny. Heâd been pretty when they were younger, under the scruffy hair and defensively smart mouth. He still had the foxy bones and elegant hands, but a layer of lean muscle and a heavier cant to his jaw skewed him to handsome. âWhat happened?â
âHe had a message for you: heâll see you at the full moon.â
âThat was all?â
âHe called me a dog.â Danny said, shrugging. âThrew his weight around a bit. Heâs not changed much.â
âHave you told Jenny that her boyfriendâs dead?â
âHeâs not. Not yet.â
Learning that his brother was in Durham had been more confirmation than revelation. That the man was alive? Now that was a surprise. Jack would deny his brother plenty of virtues, but he was an efficient killer, and he had no respect for those that werenât. Gregorâs adherents prided themselves on sharp teeth and quick kills.
Danny took his glasses off, leaving them on the dresser, and stripped out of his sweater, muscles stretching out long and loose under green-bruised skin on his ribs. It drew a growl out of Jack, and he pushed himself up off the bed, running his hands over Dannyâs side. He could feel the heat of healing flesh against his palm, Dannyâs natural internal temperature raised from the extra work.
âHe did this?â The words were a wolfâs growl forced into words by his tongue. âHe touched you?â
âNo,â Danny said. His voice hitched through the words. His throat worked as he swallowed. âThat wasnât Gregor.â
âWho, then?â
âDoesnât matter.â
Frustration wriggled through Jack, an irritation just under the skin. Want was easy to establish. Dannyâs cock was a thickening bulge under worn-soft denim, and he smelled like fucking.
